A Great Video Needs Planning
Tuesday, October 5th, 2010Video Marketing is possibly the best way to promote yourself and your business online. You need to think about a few things before you start.
It is one of the most basic things to master but you should make sure that you know your recording equipment and how to use it properly. You would be surprised at the number of stories I have heard where people have spend hours filming only to discover that there is no picture. After hours more of trying to figure out why the thing will not play properly they find out that they have left on the lens cap.
When you make your video it should always be in a suitable location. Make sure that the area to be seen by the camera is clean and tidy. You should make sure that there will be no disturbances whilst you are filming and that there are no outside influences to annoy you like someone cutting the grass or roadworks outside your window. If you are filming a talking head shot make sure that the camera is positioned correctly and that the shot is the correct height etc.
Make yourself a short test film. Check the film to make sure that the camera position is good, that there is nothing distracting in the back ground and probably most important the volume of the sound. There is little point if you make a video that looks great if no body ca hear you.
You need to make sure that there is enough light and that it is not shining at the camera. If you are filming in the open air you should ensure that the sun is kept at the back of the camera. If you are filming indoors there needs to be enough light shining on the recording area but make sure that there are no light in the shot as these will disrupt the final video. You can use the practice video for checking this.
Try to make your videos quite short. People do not very often have a lot of time and will often choose to view 2 or 3 short videos rather than 1 longer one. Less than 2 minutes is great, over 5 minutes should be saved for the people who want to watch it when you have a following.
Make sure that you get to the significant part of your message as soon as you can. If people do not find the beginning of you video interesting they will probably move on. So make sure that the videos deliver value to the viewer.
It can be quite a good idea to make a few videos at the same time. If you do this I would suggest that you change something about each one so that they do not all look the same. You should change the angle of the shot slightly or change the location, a simple change of shirt could be enough.
Upload these videos at intervals and not all at the same time on the same day. It always gets more attention if the videos are release at different times. If all the videos look the same from the screen shot, as they will unless you follow my advice, and all appear at the same time, they can often be overlooked and less effective.
These things are all important to getting the best possible videos made. The message that you are trying to get across is obviously the most vital thing but if you cannot be seen or heard the message will be lost and you will be wasting your time.
