British Columbia’s Capital city, Victoria, officially dubbed June 30 to be Social Media Day. This was even proclaimed by the city’s Mayor, Dean Forntin. The owner of local company Idea Wave approached city Councillor Chris Coleman, which got the ball rolling on this monumental day. Mashable, a popular online social media magazine picked up the story, generating massive interest worldwide. The magazine noted that Victoria was the first city worldwide to officially proclaim a Social Media Day.

A gathering was held at the Empress Hotel in Victoria’s inner harbour to celebrate the day and give the opportunity for avid social media users, as well as users who are just starting to explore and learn the value of social media, a place to meet and mingle. There were a large number of local Twitter users, who even introduced themselves to one another by their Twitter handles.
