Verification Isn’t Enough When It Comes To Twitter PR

Using Twitter for business makes plenty of sense. It’s a great way to reach out to followers while promoting yourself and your company to potentially millions of users. However, despite their bulletproof system to determine the authenticity of accounts,Twitter isn’t always the most trustworthy. News Corp. discovered this the difficult way when an account claiming to be Wendi Deng, the wife of chairman and chief executive Rupert Murdoch, was verified as authentic… except it wasn’t. Twitter PR is a powerful tool, yet even News Corp. has a few lessons to learn in terms of using Twitter for business.

Very shortly before the start of the new year, Murdoch launched his Twitter account, using the handle @rupertmurdoch. Hours after he did, the handle @wendi_deng popped up and was verified by Twitter almost instantaneously. While the handle tweeted to her followers and Murdoch’s handle, a a spokeswoman from the company stated that both accounts were real and News Corp. accepted the validity of the fake handle without consulting the couple. The tweets sounded authentic, so authentic that no one from the company dug into it.

Tuesday afternoon was when everything came crashing down, with the owner of the Wendi Deng account admitting that it was a fake. While there is nothing truly unethical about their desire to create a handle under her name (think of all of the Harry Potter and Lady Gaga accounts out there in Twitter that are not real), it brings into question how effective Twitter PR is. In the three days that the account was up it garnered thousands of followers. Although none of the tweets were offensive or embarrassing, the potential for bad Twitter PR was outstanding.

By launching Murdoch’s personal Twitter handle, News Corp. was clearly thinking of using Twitter for business, using the handle to promote the business. However, the worst part of this hoax was that no one looked into the legitimacy of this account from the company. The timing was perfect for the fake Deng account to go up. The couple were on vacation during this time, and were unreachable until their return. And since the two handles went up so close to one another, News Corp. assumed that Deng’s was simply unplanned. Once the blue verification check went up, that was the end of the matter.

News Corp. learned a valuable lesson about the potential damage that can happen from poorly controlled Twitter PR. When using Twitter for business, remember that accounts may very often be spam or someone pretending to be someone else, and you can avoid a Twitter scandel yourself.

Holy Twitter PR Batman! Why The Dark Knight Wouldn’t Be Using Twitter for Business

I’m sitting in bed playing Batman: Arkham City and a idea hits me: Does Batman make use of Twitter or maybe not Batman but his alter ego Bruce Wayne? Bruce Wayne owns Wayne Enterprise right? So why wouldn’t he be tweeting about diverse things like where he is on his boat or what model he is taking out to dinner? Twitter PR is vital, so perhaps as a responsible technology company’s president he would be using Twitter for business reasons, like tweeting about updates on new savvy tech that will be coming out by Christmas.

A billionaire philanthropist like Bruce Wayne might have a Twitter PR representative that handles his tweets for him; a Robin like assistant in the office that fetches his coffee and takes messages. No tights required of course, but an associate that handles Wayne’s Twitter for business purposes will constantly be updating and sending stuff out to the public about upcoming projects. I don’t see Batman with his iPhone tweeting about what he is up to while feeling sorry for himself on a gargoyle. Facebook PR is not really on his list of priorities as the Dark Knight.

If Batman was a tweeter though, would he be utilizing Twitter for business strictly or would he be a Twitter junkie? I would like to think Batman would use Twitter for business but we all know the control of social media. I think Batman would be tweeting non-stop. Forget Twitter PR or even using Twitter for business, Batman would be tweeting about kicking the crap out of super villains. Batman would be tweeting about some chick whose skylight he is looking through at the moment.

Would Batman have followers on his Twitter account? Bruce Wayne is using his Twitter for business and his Twitter PR is focused on gaining followers so he can remain a billionaire. What about Batman though? I know I would track those posts like a fiend. Batman posts, “Just put a beat down on the Penguin LOL” and I would post, “LMFAO.” Batman is operating Twitter for business alright; the butt-kicking business.

Twitter PR is a useful tool for a billionaire playboy philanthropist but not so much for a vigilante crime fighter. Batman has no need for social media let alone Twitter for business reasons. If there were such a thing, I doubt Batman would be playing on the phone on his down time. If I had down time as a superhero, I might consider working out or learning some other form of butt-kicking skill rather than playing Words with Friends.

Coffee And Twitter For Business: My Twitter PR Pitch Lost In The Snow

It takes a lot to sway people who know nothing about social media to hop onto the band wagon. I was meeting with a client one blistery afternoon for some coffee, hoping to convince him to use an account with Twitter for business use. I thought about the pitch of Twitter PR that I had been working on for weeks now and was confident in its potential. I was convinced that using Twitter for business was a intelligent decision but this client was from an age where computers were science fiction and swaying his opinion was going to prove difficult.

As I entered the coffee shop, I sat down at my usual seat across from the counter and gave Michelle the nod implying I wanted my regular espresso drink and held up four fingers for an extra boost; I was going to need it. I unload my notes on Twitter PR and the outline on Twitter for business purposes and skimmed my notes to refresh myself before the client arrived. I have been in marketing for many years now and just included social media into my firm. When I see an occasion to make money I go for it and social media was going to be a gold mine.

The client I was meeting was the president of a pogo stick company and his numbers were not doing well. I could see this client of mine falling through the cracks and I liked the guy too much to let him fall flat on his face, even if he never paid on time and was stingy. The client has never touched a computer let alone used one and when I say a social media site he thinks I am talking about a newspaper stand. Twitter PR has proved to work wonders for my marketing business and I have no qualms using Twitter for business. Each and every client at the tip of your fingers tweeting about your success to friends and potential clients each second of the day is what Twitter PR has to offer.

A wave of cold air rushed into the cafe, a slight drift of dirty snow made coffee colored slush on the doormat as my client scurried in from the cold. He was bundled up except for his globular nose and his gray hair peeked out from under his black fedora. He unpacked himself and placed himself in front of me. As he sat down the words of Facebook PR danced inside my mind and the idiom “Twitter for business” slid on the tip of my tongue, ready to spill out before him. The waitress came by and took my client’s order and quickly left to bring us our drinks. After a minute we drank from our steaming cups and exchanged holiday cheer and complaints about the arctic weather forced upon us.

I could not contain myself any further and had to get Twitter PR out of my mind and plant it into his. As I began to speak about using Twitter for business, the client stopped me and thanked me for my consideration in his marketing campaign. My client told me of his plans to stop working and close down the business; he had no desire to continue the game any longer and was going to take his winnings and leave the gambling to the upcoming youth of the new business world. He slipped me an envelope and told me to open it after he left and thanked me for all the hard work. I thanked him in return and did as he asked, watching him vanish into the snowy air. Inside the envelope was a check for his last fee and an email address; irony at its best don’t you think?

Facebook PR Proves The Internet Is Better Than A Phone Call To Get More Visitors When You are Sick

My wife is unwell and she needs to get more visitors coming to the house. Doctors suggest that rest, Vitamin C and good company will help aid any illness but how does someone get more visitors without calling for help? I think a good Facebook PR strategy would do wonders for this quandary don’t you? Facebook PR that depicts a solid image of positivity and good marketing strategies will get more visitors to come waltzing through the door.

Facebook PR does marvels for drug addict celebrities and businesses that do not seem to get that marketing is important to their business’ success so why not use it to get more visitors for my ailing wife? Using Facebook PR for something good and authentic like a sickly person should work flawlessly. There is nothing like a good cause to get more visitors to a Facebook PR page. Think of all the cancer patients and Sickle Cell Anemics that call to the community for more site visits. Sites like those get more visitors each day with ease!

I know what you are assuming. You think that I am a fool. That my spouse doesn’t need Facebook PR and that to get more visitors she should just pick up the phone. Well I got news for you. I am not picking up the phone. I refuse to give in to the service of a phone call in order to get more visitors to my house. I think the internet is a important tool to our way of life and o take a step back in technology and use the phone is crazy in itself!

Critique me all you want but once you see the crowds piling through my front door you are gonna want to get more visitors coming to your house when you’re sick. When that happens, don’t ask me to put a Facebook PR strategy together for you! I am proud of my Facebook PR campaign. I have hit more than 3000 likes since I established the page and I get more visitors than Cindi Lauper; and what!?

Facebook PR has done marvels for my wife’s public image. I can’t speak much about her health but I will take what I can get. The goal was to get more visitors not cure the Ebola Virus. If you want to get a professional Facebook PR page created I won’t charge much. What’s a little money to pay out to get more visitors to your door to ask how you’re feeling today?

Learning From Poor Facebook PR To Get More Visitors For Your Page

Despite the years that Facebook has been around, there is still a lot to learn about the site, especially when it comes to Facebook PR. Over the last several months, three major brands (Nestle, Domino’s, and Unites Air Lines) committed some Facebook PR snafus, along with attempts to repair the damage. Here is a break down of what happened, along with what to learn in order to get more visitors to your page and stay there for good reasons.

Back in March of 2010, Greenpeace posted a video on Nestle’s Facebook page, complaining about a non eco-friendly supplier that they used. The company’s response was to censor the video, inciting a Facebook PR whirlwind that brought lots of negative attention to the company. While their number of mentions spiked tremendously, the majority of the posts were incredibly negative. Instead of attempting to rectify the situation, Nestle continued to censor their visitors. Not only did this not help them get more visitors, but their fan’s posts remained rather nasty for a while. For your own company, if someone posts something negative, the worst thing to do is ignore the post. Instead, address that person’s complaints in order to placate them and learn from your fans what they like and don’t like about your business.

April 2010 spelled Facebook PR doom for Domino’s when two bored employees posted a crude video of them tainting food in gross ways, such as putting cheese in their noses. While videos like this are posted all of the time, this particular one spread like fire as viewers began to question their faith in Domino’s quality and care of food. After all, nobody wants to eat food that might have been tampered with. In response, Domino’s posted a video to apologize to their fans and pressed charges against their now former employees. This was a great step on their part, as they addressed their fans while helping them get more visitors in a more positive way. Publicly reaching out to your fans, through posts or video, is a great Facebook PR tool that any company can use.

Finally, United Airlines, in July 2010, received complaints from a flier whose guitars were destroyed by United handlers. When ignored by the company, the complainer went to Youtube, recording a song about his negative experience with the airline. Over 3 millions views later, a 10% drop in stock price, and $180 millions dollars lost for shareholders, United learned the difficult way that Facebook PR really does matter. Their response was to reimburse the musician, along with passing out Starbucks gift cards on all domestic flights following the incident. This method was rather passive in approach, yet effective, as United was able to get more visitors back to their page while calming down their irate fans. Everyone loves free stuff, but keep in mind that free stuff only goes so far before a real apology is needed.

These three companies are all powerful businesses, yet we see that one bad case of Facebook PR is enough to knock them down a few bars. In order to get more visitors to your Facebook page for the reasons you want to bring them in, keep three things in mind. 1 – Don’t ignore your fans if they have complaints. Realize that any post made by anyone with any affiliation to your page can still affect your reputation. A swift apology, through personal declarations and free gifts, can very easily deflate a potential storm of bad PR. Keep these helpful tips in mind and your page will do well.
