Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Ok, you’ve got the best article/video/podcast etc ever seen in your niche so money’s just going to come pouring in, right? Wrong! What good is having great content if that great content isn’t found?

I’ll give you an example to try yourself. Do a search for your niche. Skip ahead to somewhere between page ten and twenty and open a few pages. You might be surprised to find the content in a lot of the pages is as good if not better than the sites that come up top in your search.

The reason for this is simple; the site hasn’t been marketed properly! Without getting too technical, search engine optimization is creating content which is likely to show up high in a Google search. Remember 80% of a site’s traffic is usually from a search engine! Search engine optimization in the form of choosing the best keywords to target is a vital part of weather you’re going to get traffic and succeed online.

The good news is it’s quite easy to find the best keywords to help you get high search results! Google Adwords Keyword Tool is a free to use tool that gives you results of searches made in google in the last month. You type in the word or term that you’d like to create content about (something from your niche). Next hit search and see what results google gives back. For example type in bodybuilding and you might get back bodybuilding routine. These are actually real searches made in google and the search statistics to go with them. This information is extremely helpful in choosing the right keyword!

Next you have to choose the best keywords to use from the suggestions you are given. I like to pick keywords within the 8,000 and 30,000 global monthly search volume. Within this range you know there are a lot of searches being made for the term but the competition may not be as high as for the terms with very high search volumes. Check out my other articles on how to use these keywords.

The Importance of Using the Right Keywords

So, as mentioned earlier it is essential to choose the right keywords to ensure your target market finds your site. A huge portion of your visitors will find your site through search engines. They say this portion is on average 80% of your visitors! Coming up high in searches greatly improves the chance of users finding your site. A vital aspect to coming up high in search engines is choosing the right keywords.

You Must Choose The Right Keywords

Finding the right keywords to use on your site is not a difficult process. There are plenty free tools available online that will assist you in finding the best keywords. Simply key in the word or group of words that your target market will type into search engines. The keyword tool will then give you back suggestions of other words or phrases that are related to the word or phrase you have typed in, it will also give you valuable search stats on these keywords.

The Most Popular May Not Be The Best

The tool will pull up as many keyword suggestions as possible, together with the corresponding popularity percentage. It is tempting to use the most popular keywords but you have to realize that the best does not necessarily mean the most popular.

To really drive targeted traffic into your site, use long-tail keywords. These keywords have a high-volume search and yet do not have as much competition as the most popular keywords. They are also keywords that are business-specific and are closely related to and associated with the nature of your business.

Use your best keywords as often as needed. Build your content around your keywords. You will see how these keywords will increase the volume of targeted traffic to your site. Make sure not to miss the opportunity to convert your targeted traffic into actual customers.
